The “Expanding Care” article in the economist
revolves around the new medical technology that is preserving the lives of
soldiers during battle. Scientists have thought of many different methods to
try to keep soldiers alive for long enough before they take them to the
hospitals, but none have been successful. The soldiers usually died from
immense blood loss or organ injury from bullets or bombs. Researchers have now
thought of a revolutionary system to keep the soldiers temporarily preserved
until they reached the hospital with helicopters for surgery. They used two
liquids called polyol and isocyanate that form into a type of foam the closes
up at wounds, and stop the bleeding within one minute. They tried over 1,000
different combinations, but none of them solidified within the correct amount of
time. Although, bullets and bombs have become more advanced over time,
technological discoveries are quickly progressing against those advancements. In
my opinion, these medical developments are protecting our soldiers, and the
people fighting to keep our country safe. This is significant to me because I
feel that too many lives are being taken from wars and battles with other
countries, and I believe that this product is saving lives and helping people
who deserve it.
