3. a) Manufacturing filter paper is an indirect use of water because water is not being used from the paper itself, but it was used to water the tree that the paper came from, and the factory that the paper was made in. b) Premoistening of the sand and gravel is a direct use of water because we added water to the sand and gravel ourselves, and we controlled how much water went into the sand and gravel. c) The use of water to cool the distillation apparatus is a direct use of water as well because it could be controlled by the individual that was watering it and it was not only made with water, but there is water on it. 4. Purifying water means to clean or filter water of al the unnecessary substances that were in the contaminated water before. 5. Oil-water separation, sand filtration, and charcoal adsorption and filtration are three steps of techniques of purifying water. 6. Oil was removed from the foul water as well as, many substances in the foul water that were contaminating it. 7. a) Solid particles are heterozygous, but salt water is homozygous so the salt water cannot be purified. b) It needs distillation. pg. 22 1.I could do without washing cars, floors, windows, pets, washing clothes, watering indoor plants, outdoor plants, and the lawn. 2.I could not do without showering, flushing the toilet, washing my hair, or washing my hands. 3.I could reduce water use by turning of my shower water while I wash my hair, and I could also reduce water use by washing my clothes less often if their still clean. 4.A) I could use impure water to wash the floors or the windows, and I could also reuse water from when I took a bath to wash my pets. B) This can be taken from dishwater or my bath tub.
