TERMS

Unit 1A
Filtration- separation of particles; retains solid particles allowing liquid to pass through
Filtrate- the liquid collected after filtration
Adsorbs- attracts and holds on its surface
Percent Recovery- percent of original foulwater sample recovered as purified water
Histogram- showing the percent recovery obtained by all labratory groups
Median- middle value
Electrical Conductivity- dissolved electrically charged particals
Hydrologic Cycle- remaining water flows back into the water cycle
Direct Water Use- directly measured water
Indirect Water Use- hidden uses of water that one hasnt considered
Gaseous State- water vapor in the air
Liquid State- water
Solid State- Ice
Surface Water- home's water supply originated in a river or other body of water
Ground Water- if water originated in a well
Aquifer- a water-bearing layer of rock, sand, or gravel that pumpls water to the surface
Physical Property- properties that can be observed and measured without chamging the chemical makeup of the substance
Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass
Density- mass of material within a given volume
Freezing Point- 0 degrees celcius at normal atmospheric pressure
Aqueous Soultion- water-based solution Melting Point- the temperture at which a solid turns into a liquid
Boiling Point- The temperature at which a liquid boils at normal atmospheric pressure
Mixture- two or more substances combine, and yet the substances retain their individual properties Heterogeneous Mixture- Composition is not the same or uniform throughout
Suspension- the solid particles are large enough to settle out or can be separated by using filtration Tyndall Effect- scattering of light
Colloid- small, solid particles were stil in the water
Homogeneous- uniform throughout
Solution- homogeneous mixtures
Solute- Salt; dissolved substance
Solvent- Water; the dissolving agent
Particulate Level-at the level of its atoms and molecules
Atoms- building blocks of matter
Element- matter that is made up of only one kind of atom
Compound- a substance that is composed of the atoms of two or more elements linked together chemically in a certain fixed proportion
Chemical Formulas- compounds and elements
Substance- a uniform and definite composition
Molecule- the smallest unit of a molecular compound that retains the properties of that substance
